Some facts you probably didn’t know about Georgia
Did you know that the first college to grant degrees to women was Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia? Yes, it happened on December 23, 1836!

Affectionately known as the “Peach State”, Georgia is one of the largest and most diverse states east of the Mississippi River in the US. With landscapes that go from picturesque mountains to expansive swamps, this charming southern state is something that you definitely won’t like to miss.
The Flag of Georgia
First, let’s talk about its flag. Georgia’s flag is a rectangle with three horizontal stripes alternating red, white, and red; and the state’s coat of arms is on a blue square right at the corner of the flag.
It also has the state’s motto “Wisdom, Justice, and Moderation.” It is one of three U.S. state flags to feature the words “In God We Trust“, with the other two being those of Florida and Mississippi.

Places to visit in Georgia
Now let’s talk about the beautiful places you can visit! Like Brasstown Bald, the highest peak in Georgia!
North Georgia is a paradise for adventurers and casual nature lovers alike, and at almost 4,800 ft high, this huge mountain is one of the best hiking trails in the state! It has stunning scenic views, especially during autumn.

If we talk about mountains, we can’t ignore Lookout Mountain in Rock City!
At the top of this mountain, you can find an amusement park that blends a beautiful natural setting with a heavy dose of kitschiness including a variety of garden gnomes hidden throughout the landscape.
You can gaze at a 100-foot waterfall, cross a 200-foot long swinging bridge, and edge your way through the narrow rock passageway known as “Fat Man’s Squeeze”.

But if you looking for something more relaxing, there’s no better option than the Silver Comet Trail. One of the best things about northern Georgia is the amount of beautiful and easily-accessible nature trails. Trust me, there are a lot! But probably the best one is the Silver Comet Trail. It’s almost 62 miles long and it’s perfect, not only for peaceful walks but also for cycling.
Speaking about nature, did you know that the Georgia Aquarium is the largest aquarium in the world? That’s right, it houses more than 100,000 aquatic animals in over 10 million gallons of water. Imagine!

But there are more than fishes in Georgia, other very popular animals all around the state are sea dragons, Japanese spider crabs, California sea lions, albino alligators, piranhas, and emerald tree boas.
Tasty Food in Georgia
Speaking about landscapes and animals got me hungry! You can find some really tasty food in Georgia, like peanuts. Yeah, peanuts are already well known all around the US, but in Georgia, they are super popular! Here you can find raw peanuts, green peanuts, roast peanuts, fried peanuts, and the best, boiled peanuts.

Shrimp and Grits are one of the most popular dishes in all of the southern US. It’s prepared with ground corn, shrimp, cheese, or sometimes, butter. Delicious!

But what about the dessert? The buttermilk pie is a traditional dessert in Georgia and it’s quite similar to the custard pie but even better! The basic filling of the buttermilk pie consists of a mixture of sugar, butter, eggs, buttermilk, and wheat flour.

Of course, we can’t forget about the classic and most popular fruit in all of Georgia: peaches! Some home cooks and chefs around the state use peaches in pies, jams, jellies, ice cream, and of course, peach cobbler. Georgia is not called “the peach state” for nothing.

Now, what about a good cold drink? If you like Coke, then you’re going to love Georgia! Because at a drugstore in Columbus, Georgia in May 1886, John Pemberton formulated the popular drink.
Today, the headquarters for Coca-Cola is located in Atlanta. You can also tour the World of Coca-Cola in Atlanta, where you can sample more than 100 beverages!
And these are just a few things about Georgia, there’s a lot more to see but we don’t want to spoil any fun or surprises!
